- How wind shear affects anvil clouds: anvil blowoff
- W011005S
- How wind shear affects anvil clouds. A distant updraft pumps a steady stream of air upward where it is then blown downwind aloft as an anvil. Since the cloud rises within a three-dimensional atmosphere, the anvil is the result of the fastest winds (moves farthest forward) and of changes in direction with height. This shifts different parts of the towering cloud forward in differing amounts.
