- Thunderstorm shelf cloud layers. The shelf cloud ahead of a storm has a light gray forward edge with fine bands in it. It’s mostly vertical surface reflects skylight. Above it is the dense cloud layer formed from lifted warm air ahead of the gust front. It is a horizontal layer that tapers down into the distance and appears dark against the much higher anvil sheet above.
