- Effect of topography on clouds: cloud bank from lift over hills
- W022514S
- Effect of topography on clouds. There is a reason why this long cloud bank looks so peculiar. An ordinary boundary or front would have separate cells or a progression in the way towers grow. Here, lift over hills creates nonstandard convective element arrangements that loosely mirror the topography. Anywhere the line passes over a high point, the air “bounces” upward to enhance cloud depth and push tops higher. The forced lift creates light showers which erode the base at left under the older cloud parts.
