- Factors affecting thunderstorm cloud growth potential. In this very unstable air mass, once a convective cloud forms it quickly sprouts taller. But two other influences counteract this. First, towers are immediately toppled and stretched forward by the increasing wind speed with height (vertical wind shear). In addition, subsidence and cooling overspreads the area with the anvils which cut off the solar heating. The result is clouds that try and try to grow but fail.
