- Inside the outflow region behind the gust front, the sky appears confused as conflicting air streams shape the clouds. Distant rain is surrounded by wrinkly cloud bands while, lower down, lines of scud flow away from the cold air source and are enhanced over higher land. Once the cold outflow air moves in, the air mass is too stable to allow strong convection and cloud bases are lighter and higher as a result.
