- All about thunderstorm anvil clouds: anvil clouds, old and new

- All about thunderstorm anvil clouds. Anvil clouds are compressed by distance. A distant Cumulonimbus cloud has a flat anvil top which appears to be close to the storm. Its lateral extent is not readily obvious but the anvil spreads out at right angles to its motion. On closer inspection, it becomes apparent that the anvil has “shed” an older, evaporating stage which has detached as an orphan anvil. Another older anvil at top has become a thin, white cirriform veil.
