- Clues in storm cloud base detail. Large-scale boundaries can have low, dark bases along them that look like a shelf cloud because the entire line is being nudged gently forward by outflow. But the outflow here does not undercut the updrafts and the lowest parts of the base are in the centre. This shows that it represents a long rain-free base where air rises uniformly, dropping showers at the back.
