- Vertical wind shear. This environment is similar to W010665Z but less dry and more unstable. Strong shear rips the tops off early Cumulus towers and they freeze and evaporate as woolly, low anvil clouds. But the updraft base at the back (left) holds together and further heating allows each cloud tower to climb higher until finally a storm can survive the disruptive shear.
