- Connection between clouds near storms. These two unrelated clouds have a common history. A long bank of distant storms on a squall line sends out periodic bursts of outflow from stronger convective phases. These travel west into the clear sky as long roll clouds. As they move farther from the storm, they meet more northerly winds behind the system, creating the diagonal shear lines within the clouds.
