- A deep, sculpted Arcus cloud precedes a squall line in a wild, stormy sky. By looking at the south end (left) it becomes apparent that the cloud is conical and widens along the axis of rising air toward the right. Air converges along the axis, moves right and up, then begins to lean out above the base. Farther back, updrafts form showers that add to the rain behind the gust front.
