- Rain-free base on a storm cloud, right beside heavy rain core

- Every storm cloud that is still active has a rain-free base close to the rain. This continuous baseline or broad dark area is where updrafts carry air high into the storm but no rain yet reaches the ground. The rain-free base of a supercell is usually a line of towers, called a flanking line, stepping up into the storm.
