- What causes Mammatus clouds: fallout and downdrafts
- W011875Z
- What causes Mammatus clouds? A powerful Cumulonimbus storm bedecked with silvery Mammatus pouches. Updrafts carry cloudy air to the tropopause inversion, where they spread out to form the flat anvil. Fallout induces downdrafts, leading to separate pockets of sinking air carrying particles that show up as lumps or bulges (Mamma) on the anvil’s underside.
