- What makes a supercell different? A supercell stands above an ordinary thunderstorm in the way it controls the flow of air in and around it, forming tall and shapely cloud structures. Towers distant east lead up to a core where updrafts form massive amounts of precipitation. Part of the cloud flattens into a gray anvil with white crown above, where the air overshoots the stable tropopause slightly.
