- Anvils are accessory clouds that form as part of a convective cloud when its updraft spreads out at a stable level. When the anvil is atop a thin, tall updraft, as here, it begins to look like an independent cloud that does not match any cloud type very well. The entire cloud resembles a dry, scrawny Cumulonimbus, but also defies standardization.
