- A small cloud tuft, or jumping Cirrus, above an anvil cloud
- W982729S
- Now and then, a small cloud tuft is seen above the top surface of an anvil cloud on a storm. It is casually called “jumping Cirrus” because it seems to appear suddenly as a frozen tuft which slowly vanishes. It forms when a small-scale updraft bubble squirts up above the main cloud edge. The cloud is initially supercooled water but quickly freezes. See close-up W982730S.
