- Recognizing gust front Arcus clouds. A thick, low Arcus or shelf cloud denotes a gust front ahead of a storm and the arrival of cooler air. The most obvious visual clue is a long, lighter cloud band that crosses the view below clouds which appear to radiate out from the storm at right angles to the gust front line.
