- Inflow meets outflow under a storm base. A heavy rain curtain in a changing stormy sky. A strong thunderstorm dumps a dense curtain of rain and hail at left while new updrafts rise along the straight flanking line base and merge with it, maintaining the storm’s strength. The edge of the rain is slanted (rain foot) where a wet downburst surge of cool air digs under the warmer updrafts. Some of the moisture from the rain mixes upward to condense as chunks of dark scud below the rain-free base.
