- Mammatus and storm danger. A line of convection contains a small storm at left with an anvil hanging back from the advancing cold front boundary. Mamma bulges hang from its base, suggesting a turbulent sky. However, Mammatus clouds indicate sinking air and stable conditions and are most commonly seen in older anvils away from the active updraft region of a storm.
