- Cloud type, Ac: how billows break up a cloud sheet. Billows are breaking up this layer of Altocumulus clouds. The cloud sheet was initially unbroken. Slow ascent up the slope of a warm front boundary had induced frictional forces in the flow resulting in rollers or waves. Once these up and down motions were initiated in the cloud layer, it broke into a pattern. Where air rose, crests grew thicker but where it sank, clear gaps formed. The subsidence between billows helped to bring dry air down to accelerate the evaporation of the cloud generally.
