- When viewing a storm's backside (upwind aloft, or southwest here) from underneath the rain-free base, it often looks like there is a lowering near the back edge. This can be an illusion of perspective or may sometimes be true. Most often, as here, it is because outflow meets inflow near the back edge to slightly lower the entire updraft base.
