- An example of cloud shapes and reflection of light. A blanket of thick Pileus undulates over a storm’s boiling crown in this close-up view. The upper parts appear dark because their curved surfaces reflect very little light back at a steep angle (to the observer) from the glancing sunlight. Between and below the two main Pileus are brighter clouds which reflect more sunshine because they are more vertical (not readily obvious in this compressed perspective).
