- This anvil cloud, left behind by a forward propagating thunderstorm, has many distinct steps or stages visible. They progress from a high, older horizontal sheet to newer and lower parts angled to intercept sunlight. Each is a strong updraft burst which has spread out above the storm and drifts slowly away from its source in lighter winds aloft.
