- Overview of a typical severe storm from the southeast side. A rain core is preceded by a low, dark inflow base extending south as a flanking line. Warm air converges ahead and along this axis, rising to become the main updraft ahead. Behind the axis the sky brightens and bases rise as drier RFD air mixes with outflow and pushes forward against the flanking line.
