- With an MCS (Mesoscale Convective System) or any large thunderstorm complex, anvils do not generally spread as far ahead of the active stormy area as with squall lines, which are synoptic or mesoscale features of long duration and with far forward, high anvils. Here, the higher layers darken and thicken quickly and the storm will soon arrive.
